Computer Security
System running slow... You could be infected with spyware or trojans!
Viruses, worms and backdoor trojans not only compromise security, they can corrupt data and result in complete data loss. Spyware can sometimes come bundled with (well known) programs, depending on the download site. Computers on a network are particularly vulnerable. To avoid getting infected:
- Purchase and install Antivirus software.
- Never install more than one Antivirus program.
- Keep your Virus Definitions up to date!
- Enable AutoProtect.
- Keep all software up to date.
- Apply all Operating System Security Updates.
- To prevent scripts from running in rich text email, disable the preview pane.
- Do not follow links in SPAM.
- Use a SPAM filter.
- Avoid sites that offer free (name brand) software and free mp3's.
- Avoid unknown online gaming and adult-only sites.
- Be wary of third-party browser toolbars and "helper" applications.
- Be wary of file sharing software.
- Do not allow sites to download anything into your computer!
- Scan all downloaded files before opening or executing (images included).
- Scan floppy disks and CD-ROM's that have been in someone else's computer.
- Consider disabling ActiveX Controls in your browser.
- Configure your browser to block third-party cookies.
- Install a firewall.
- Install a Spyware Detection & Removal tool, run at least once a week and keep up to date.
- Use a browser that blocks pop-ups or disable Javascript.
If you get an error message, write it down. Make a list of the issues that are concerning you. Call (905) 639-9198 and speak to Service.

It is recommended that computers be brought in for cleaning once every six months—more often if they are exposed to cigarette smoke, high levels of dust or pet hair. Debris inside the case can cause a computer to overheat resulting in hardware destruction and possible data loss.
